As a retired ER doctor who saw humans struck by a variety of pistol and rifle bullets (including .30-06) as well as shotguns, I can attest that the results are devastating with .30-06 hits. Even at 200 yards (or whatever the exact range was in this case), most bullets fired from commercial ammunition have enough energy to pass through the neck. Judging by the low-resolution video I saw of the shooting, it’s difficult to believe the bullet struck anything substantial enough to deflect it into the chest (as some people suggested) or into the brain (as others proposed). An autopsy could conclusively determine the exact bullet path and presence or absence of an exit wound, but I haven’t heard any authoritative disclosure of autopsy results. In general, bullets don’t substantially deflect unless they strike bone — and if they do, they can go in surprising directions, sometimes deflecting so much and tunneling so far they can be difficult to locate by x-rays. In response, I conceived and prototyped a scanner that quickly helped me localize bullets or bullet fragments so I would know exactly what x-rays to order.

.30-06 is devastating rnd. Hunted with it for almost 40 yrs ,180grain core loc. Killed huge wild hogs , took a ton of big deer . 200 yard shots is no problem .sighted in 1 inch high 100 yards.
